Gibraltar – The Peak of Europe & the Skywalk

blog image program 011

Getting there:  From Fuengirola, follow the coastal highway (A-7) all the way south. You’ll reach the Spanish–Gibraltarian border (La Línea de la Concepción) in about 1 hour 30 minutes. A passport or ID card is required to enter. Occasionally, queues may form at the border.

Why go?

A slice of Great Britain on the Mediterranean: dramatic cliffs, caves, monkeys, glass viewpoints and breathtaking panoramas all the way to Africa.

Official tickets

How to get up the Rock

Two tried-and-tested options:

  1. Minibus “Rock Tour”
    • Small-group minibuses depart from Gibraltar town or near the border, offering a 1.5–2 hour guided loop.
    • Comfortable, informative, no hiking required. Drivers share stories and take you to all major viewpoints.
    • Typical stops include: St. Michael’s Cave Great Siege Tunnels Apes’ Den (Barbary macaques) Often also the Skywalk and Windsor Suspension Bridge
  2. Cable Car + walking
    • The cable car takes you straight to the Top Station, from where you can explore on foot.
    • A more flexible and active option, but requires more walking and elevation gain.

Note: To access the main sites on the Upper Rock, Nature Reserve ticket is required. Many minibus tours already include this—always confirm when booking.

What will you see?

  • Michael’s CaveA spectacular limestone cave with modern light and sound installations; easy to walk through.
  • Great Siege Tunnels 18th-century tunnels carved into the rock, with exhibits and amazing views over the bay.
  • Apes’ Den (Barbary macaques) Europe’s only wild macaque population. ⚠️ Do NOT feed or touch them— this is illegal and fined. Protect bags and food; they are clever “pickpockets”.
  • Skywalk & Windsor Suspension Bridge — this is illegal and fined. Protect bags and food; they are clever “pickpockets”.
  • Europa Point - The southernmost tip of Gibraltar, lighthouse included — on clear days you can see Africa.
  • Main Street & Casemates Square A lively pedestrian zone with cafés, shops and historic buildings.

Tips from our own experience:

  • Documents - Always carry a valid passport or ID. Gibraltar is not in Schengen, so border checks apply.
  • Money: Local currency: Gibraltar Pound (GIP) and British Pound (GBP). Euros are widely accepted but exchange rates vary. Cards work almost everywhere.
  • Phone & Internet: Roaming charges may apply. Turn off data roaming or check your provider’s rates beforehand.
  • Timing: Border queues can be long during late afternoon/evening peaks. Best to arrive early and leave not too late.
  • Clothing & Gear: Wear comfortable shoes and light layers — it can be windy at the top. Bring water. Keep bags zipped — the monkeys love snacks.

Shopping:

Gibraltar feels “duty-free”, but compare prices and respect Spanish import limits for alcohol/tobacco when returning.
