Málaga – Old Town, Castles & Museums

blog image program 012

Why go?

Andalusia’s “city of museums” with palm-lined promenades, beaches and vibrant gastronomy: the Alcazaba, Gibralfaro Castle, Roman Theatre, Picasso heritage and the modern Muelle Uno marina all in one walkable city.

Highlights

  • Alcazaba & Gibralfaro Fortress complex with panoramic ramparts. Tip: Don’t start the climb from the port side—approach from the Old Town; it’s much easier and leads to the same viewpoint.
  • Roman Theatre At the foot of the Alcazaba.
  • Cathedral (“La Manquita”) Impressive interior; seasonal special programs.
  • Museo Picasso Málaga Over 200 works by the master.
  • Centre Pompidou Málaga (“the colorful cube”) - 20th–21st century art.
  • Muelle Uno & Palmeral de las Sorpresas Waterfront promenade with restaurants.
  • Atarazanas piac Fresh seafood, ham, fruit and local produce.
  • Soho Málaga / MAUS Street-art district.

Distance & driving time:~35 km | 30–40 minutes

Best time to visit Go in the morning to visit the castles before the heat; enjoy sunset from Gibralfaro.

Tips from our own experience:

  • Parking: Muelle Uno underground garage (close to the port, walking distance to everything).
  • Málaga’s main pedestrian street is spectacularly lit for Christmas from late November.
  • To reach Gibralfaro, avoid the long staircase from the port side—approach from the Old Town for a much easier climb.
